Position Statement on Inclusive Education

What it is:

Inclusive education is about enabling all students and young people to full participate in the mainstream education system. Inclusive education guarantees the inclusion of disabled people, and includes primary and high schools, college, university and any other place where education is provided.

Article 24 of the UN Convention supports the right access to education by disabled learners. Crucially this article highlights how society views disabled people, specifically in education, has to change. This article has been signed and ratified by forty countries so far.

What we think about it:

Inclusive education is a human rights issue and one that we as a society can achieve over time. UKDPC strongly support the fight for inclusive education, to achieve a society where disabled people and particularly young disabled students, are participating in an inclusive educational environment. The Government has a responsibility in protecting and upholding inclusive education like all other human rights.

To succeed, we need to make sure that schools and other places of education are given the training and resources to ensure every student’s equality and participation in all aspects of the life of the learning community.

What do we want people to do?

DPOs and individuals need to play a vital role in promoting and fighting for inclusive education with UKDPC and our partner organisations, including the Alliance for Inclusive Education. We ask everyone to support ALLFIE’s nine key principles for inclusive education. These are:

  • A person’s worth is independent of their abilities or achievements
  • Every human being is able to feel and think
  • Every human being has a right to communicate and be heard
  • All human beings need each other
  • Real education can only happen in the context of real relationships
  • All people need support and friendship from people of their own age
  • Progress for all learners is achieved by building on things people can do rather than what they cannot do
  • Diversity brings strength to all living systems
  • Collaboration is more important than competition

We need to lobby Government to change education and education-related legislation, policies, and services to ensure that inclusive education is both achievable and sustainable for ALL disabled learners.
