UKDPC Tribute to Nick Danagher (posted 10/07/2012)

The disabled people’s movement are mourning the sudden loss of Nick Danagher who passed away on Friday, 6th July 2012.  He was a creative thinker who shared the cause of the independent living movement he wanted it to be a reality for all disabled people and not just a few.  Nick certainly knew how to communicate the message of the Independent Living Movement and worked tirelessly to advocate for disabled people to have greater choice and control over their lives.

He was one of the few disabled people to be commissioned by various local authorities to work at a strategic level on Self Directed Support. He acted as a vehicle for disabled people and was extremely influential in terms of developing this agenda within mainstream society.

Those who had the opportunity to know Nick knew him for his witty sense of humour that relished in political debate about almost anything.  While we all mourn the devastation of his passing it also provides an opportunity to celebrate the life of one of the great activists.

Nick is sure one of the legendaries of the independent living movement who inspired politicians, officers and others to support the work of independent living.

Our condolence goes out to his family; he was someone that meant so much too many of us and surely will be missed.
